Thankfulness & Gratitude

March 6, 2009 - 2:47 am No Comments

Last week I was slightly injured in a bus accident.

Thursday afternoon and evening were rainy then during the night it got cold resulting in very icy roads.  The bus I was riding to work skidded on ice, throwing me out of my seat with force enough to crash the right side of my face into the corner of the seat across the aisle.  I had xrays done and had everything checked out by my doctor and the results are very good.  I only got some bad brusing and a scratch on my right cornea.  It could have been a lot worse.

One thing I have observed as a result of the incident:  so many people have problems with gratitude.  Many of my co-workers are urging me to obtain legal counsel and “sue the pants off” the bus company.  They appear to be puzzled by my disinterest in pursuing such a course of action.  I’m not really interested in getting anything more from the bus company’s insurance than what it takes to cover my medical bills which will mostly likely include some chiropractic care (the right shoulder & the right side of my neck are stiff and out of alignment).

I’m grateful that the injuries are as minor as they are.  I know that things could have been a lot different.

What has been going on at work during the aftermath of the incident has made me realize how much I really have to be thankful/grateful for.    I have a job in what is shaping up to be a fearful time for many.  I have a place to live that is comfortable and enough to eat.  I have friends who love me and support me (both online and off).  I have my “family of choice” that I can count on no matter what happens.  I’ll never lack for shelter no matter what happens.

Because I strive to live in an “attitude of gratitude” I have been noticing that the incoming calls I get at work are much more positive, even when I can’t give a caller the answer he or she is wanting.  I hear co-workers around me constantly complaining about the awfulness of the calls they get and how the callers are uniformly crabby.  They haven’t yet learned that such “stinkin’ thinkin’” only draws more negativity into their lives.

What things are you grateful for in your life?  Let’s all strive to look for the good things we can be grateful for.
